Kakamatua

It’s pretty dreary outside today which led me to cast my mind back to a few weekends ago when I headed out West with the family to Kakamatua.

Kakamatua is a small inlet on the Western side of the Manukau Harbour. Driving West it’s just past Laingholm on the Huia Road towards Cornwallis. You park in a small gravel car park and then stroll through bush before coming out alongside a river that feeds into the beach. It’s a beautiful spot but the real reason we were there were the dogs.

Kakamatua has been adopted by dog lovers as an off leash beach. Officially this isn’t quite the case but the Council seems to be fine with dogs being off leash as long as they are under control.

We were there for Ruby, our black lab and with a whole beach free for playtime she was totally in her element. Being a lab she has webbed paws loves swimming like nothing else. She spent the whole time diving in and out of the surf and cavorting with other dogs while Lucy and I took ourselves around the coastline, hunting for crabs and rock pools.

Soon everyone was a bit worn out and we dragged ourselves off to the car, shoes soaked, dog soaked. I’d say it was pretty successful.
