DECEMBER IS HERE!!!!! Which means it is officially Advent, officially time for the trees to go up, advent calendars to be scoffed and excitement to slowly swell to bursting!
In New Zealand, Christmas is perhaps the only holiday which we truly commit to (and I mean why not? Christmas even accounts for the Scrooges and Grinches!) which means HELLO! Christmas themed things to do.
Rather sacriligiously a lot of pre Christmas events have already happened but if you’re prone to missing out then I have got your back! Take a squizz below for all the lovely things to do in Auckland over the coming weeks (eep, sorry people from different parts of the Earth!)
And similar degrees of festivus can be found right across the city. Auckland Council have helpfully divided up parades, carols and festivals into North, South, West and Central regions here.
Edge Kingsland are hosting a Fraft Market on the 11th of December (hand made goodies) while as per usual Westfield Downtown is hosting Twelve Days of Christmas markets from the 2nd to the 13th of December.
The Britomart Farmers Market goes Christmassy this Saturday, while the Silo Park Markets & Cinema join in on the fun Thursday – Sunday each week. I’m a bit sad to be missing out on The Nightmare Before Christmas playing on the 13th for my work Christmas party but on the 20th they’re playing The Muppet Christmas Carol (!!)
Last but not least Aotea Square will turn into the The Edge’s Unwrapping Christmas Markets once more for Friday (13 & 20th) and Saturday (14 & 21st) of this month.
We all know I love a good show (Shoot, I still need to review Chicago!) and Christmas offers both magical and silly performance opportunities. Needless to say surely is Christmas in the Park on the 14th of December. More exciting is The Basement’s A Basement Christmas Carol, Electric Burlesque’s Christmas Edition tomorrow night and the New Zealand Ballet’s season of A Christmas Carol.
It would not be Christmas without the lights and this year I’m hoping to see them all! (maybe). Franklin Road lit up on Sunday, while Onehunga lights up this Friday night.
If you haven’t been through Santa’s Enchanted Forest at Smith and Caughey’s before, then you MUST. It is truly magical and a great trip to see Santa with the little ones. Details and times are on the website here while my trip a couple of years ago is here.
With all the events and buying and lights and crazy, sometimes it’s easy to forget that Christmas is about the giving. Auckland City Mission are asking people to be someone’s angel. Will you?
Last but not least, check out the Wellington Advent Calendar!! Yeah, okay, it’s not in Auckland but oh man, why don’t we have one of these?!
